MYTE zine information

Hey art geeks. Here you will find all the information on the planning and creation process of the MYTE zine. This is not a MYTE exclusive project, so anyone who is not in MYTE and is a high school youth can feel free to join in on it. Simply hook up with The Center Long Beach.

What is MYTE?
MYTE(mentoring youth through empowerment) is a group of high school queer youth and their allies who come together to empower themselves through education. We meet at The Center Long Beach Tuesday-Fridary from 2-6pm. You can find out more at centerlb.org

What is a zine?
A zine is a mini-magazine that features original artwork such as poetry, short stories, sketches, illustrations, etc.

What are we trying to create?
The MYTE youth are trying to create a zine from scratch as a team. This includes the organization of the zine and the production process of it as well.

We will need certain things in order to produce this zine. We will decide on what we want/need to get at our first meeting. Below will be listed the items we agree on.

All of us as in everyone that we think would want to participate?


Well, I know my mom wouldn't mind me going but its the other parents that I'm not so sure about. Can you pick a day you think would be good and I'll ask my pals from there?

How about December 10th? We can meet at The Center around 4pm, and then start discussing.

discuss what exsacally? and dont you also have to figure out who all is in the zine group?

So we can:
1) Find out what materials we need in order to create the zine
2) Find out how many artists we have for each genre
3) Come up with check-in dates for the future
4) Fundraising ideas

I'm assuming the people who are in the group(we discussed this when we created groups a couple weeks ago and everyone chose what they wanted to participate in)are checking in to this site. I'll also tell Rikka to let people know who wanted to participate.

you should lol, cause i thought there was like four people? i could be wrong though... *shrugs*

Roughly how many Zine helpers do you need exactly?

~thinks~ writers, editors, buisness people... but then agian this is only from the poly people... a couple could probobly do it if they really wanted too. ~i dunno... ~shrugs~

It would be great to get as many artists in on this as possible. So if you know anyone who might be interested in helping contribute art or sticking around for the production process, just let them know about it. I don't really have a limit. The more artists we have the more diverse our zine will be.

I have a poet who has written more than 40 poems and she's going to narrow them down to her favorites and I'm going to bring them in on wednesday when I go.

I know one artist who is interested...going to ask another pal of mines and maybe our club secretary as well...

Any type of writers in specific your looking for?
what if the writing is rated above PG-13?
Anything that cannot be included in the writing?

Any and all types of writers are welcome; if they are an artist, and their art can be viewed on a piece of paper, they are welcome. As for censorship, what kind of over PG-13 are we talking about? Sexual content? Violence? Cursing? I want everyone to have rights to their creativity, so I don't really want to censor anything. However, if it gets too sexual to the point of erotica I will not include it in the zine. So kissing, violence, some cursing is fine.

Does the whole entire zine fall under queers and their allies and nothing else? Like for instance, one of my friends wrote this HILARIOUS but also kinda sad poem that I just loved! But it has nothing to do with queers and their allies. More like a floor that's sadden because its always getting stepped on. Its a cool poem none the less.

I'm sure we will be fine if its not about queers and their allies but as this is the zine for myte we could include some of it... then again it is a way to express ourselves. Dec. 10th? Uhm well i have tutoring tues. and thurs. and gym mon. wed. and fri. sooo... any day is fine

Sounds cool. As for the exclusive queer theme, that will be a topic that we will decide on December 10th. If we have everyone there, then we will be able to decide in what direction we will take it.

Questions are good, it makes me feel like I signed up for this site for a reason. So thank you.

Cool Victor, if you know any other artists who would be interested, bring them along. The more artists we have, the better.

This is my biggest concern since it happened once, what if that tiny room is too small for everyone? o.o

That's why I don't really wanna bring the people who might be interested >.>

We can always meet in a bigger room; I have three places that are available to us in The Center. So the size of the room shouldn't be a problem - I'd say bring as many people as possible. The problem I find is we don't have as many people as we should. So I think it would be best if you just invited artists that you know who would like to participate.

I'll also tell my GSA Tuesday if anyone would like to help and be committed to it

and commitment is the main thing too. you have to make sure they have the time to commit. and not just stop halfway through

and that's a problem I know some people would have....man! I would be committed, but I may not be able to make it ALL the time since I kinda live far from the center =/

Are we going to exchange emails and be posting stuff on this site if some people can't meet at the center?

Commitment is most definitely one of the most important qualities that we are looking for when we start to create the zine. And for those who do not live close by to the center, we will not hold weekly meetings so there won't be very much pressure. I'll put up a folder in Rikka's office where people can drop their art in, so you can come at whatever time suits you best. However, once we start to get to the production process, we'll probably need to meet twice a month or so. We'll discuss it more once we are all together. But I would still suggest to bring as many people as possible; it's better to have more than enough than less than enough.

arnt there also the fact that we already do meet twice a month right? so you could try to fit it in the scedual then
